A Shooting at a school is not the new normal
Another day, another shooting at a school. Seventeen more are dead at a high school in Florida. Yep...more thoughts and prayers are sent out to the victims. We aren't surprised by this anymore. It's become our new normal.
A few years ago, it would have taken me just a few minutes to think about what I was going to write in response to a mass shooting event. Yesterday, I just went on with my day. This morning I reshared a piece I had written a few years ago. I've been doing that a lot lately.
My thoughts were I didn't need to write about this anymore because it's pretty much the same thing over and over and over again. Maybe that's part of the problem. Maybe we're all so used to this now that we've become jaded as well as numb to these events.
We're now treating this as normal when it's anything but that.
So after thinking it over, I decided to get out of bed, get off my ass and write about this again. We can not think of the killing of our children as normal behavior. We can not have parents worrying about sending their children to school as normal behavior. Eighteen shootings in forty-five days is not normal behavior.
This does not happen in any other country than the United States. It needs to stop and it needs to stop now. If our current political leaders won't do anything about this except offer their thoughts and prayers, we need to find some new ones who will. Before you vote in the next election, check to see who is taking millions of dollars in donations from the NRA. Also, check to see who is voting for cutbacks to our mental health facilities. Then make your decision. November can't come soon enough.
Maybe then we can change what is considered normal.
