A Tribute to Jack Bruce
Legendary musician Jack Bruce died today at age 71.
If there was a Mt. Rushmore for Bassist you'd find Bruce there, along with John Entwistle, Paul McCartney and maybe Jack Casasdy.
Best known for his work with Cream, Bruce also played with John Mayall, Graham Bond, West-Bruce & Laing, and Ringo Starr's All Starr Band. He also had a long solo career and was in great demand as a session musician.
Plagued by drug addiction and declining health, Bruce underwent a liver transplant in 2003. He recovered enough to perform in a series of reunion concerts with Cream.
Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker had a love-hate relationship that continued until the end. They loved playing together but couldn't stand to be with each other. It wasn't just arguments but it became physical and included them sabotaging the other's equipment while on stage.
Bruce talking about his relationship with Baker " We're happily co-existing in different continents. I'm in England, he's in South Africa. I was thinking of asking him to move. He's still a little too close."
