A Year In The Life....My Favorite Moments At ChicagoNow-Part 1
Yesterday was not just Mother's Day. It was also my one year anniversary of writing at ChicagoNow.
One year....209 of these things. Are you kidding me? The numbers are a little skewed by the 30 I did for Parkinson's Awareness Month but still, that's about doing one of these every other day. No wonder I'm tired!!
Anniversaries are always a good time to take a look back so that's what I'm going to do. Here are some of my favorite moments and blogs in the last year.
About a month after I started, the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup. At the Parade/Rally, Hawk Goalie Corey Crawford dropped a few F-bombs. I wrote a piece called Corey Crawford Said Fuck about why he went a little overboard. It's still my favorite title. And Corey...anytime you want to stop letting in the softies will be okay with all of us Hawk fans.
In July, I decided to write a story about medical marijuana. I have Parkinson's Disease and I thought I'd write about how have a little buzz might ease my symptoms better than traditional Parkinson's meds. Plus being the selfless guy that I am, I'm hoping to ease the pain of others with chronic illnesses.
The bill to approve Medical Marijuana in Illinois had been sitting on Governor Pat Quinn's desk for months. Coming into Los Angeles...bringing in a couple was my way of telling him to sign the damn thing. Apparently it worked. He signed the bill a few days later. So when you're eating a brownie to ease the side effects of whatever disease you have....well...you're welcome (eyeroll).
A few weeks later I was walking past this pet store. I took a peek inside and saw they had puppies for sale...cute puppies. I went inside and found out not only would they sell you cute little doggies but they'd finance them too. Seemed pretty seedy so I wrote How Much Is That Doggie In The Window and the next thing you know, I'm at a rally and meeting the Governor and the head of the Puppy Mill Project...hi Pat and Carrie.
Finally. I decided I was going to write a music piece or two on the weekend. Trying to do something a little different. Then came the announcements that The Allman Brothers Are Calling It Quits. Yep...after about 45 years, the band is breaking up. I wrote that I didn't care and to me the band was dead 30 years ago. It brought out a lot of comments. That number is now at 187...all negative. More than a few were from guys who were sorry I didn't end up as fluid somewhere on my mother's body. Nice...happy Mother's Day. Someone told me Greg Allman was coming to Chicago to beat me up. I'm still waiting. You know what they call people who leave nasty comments on your Blog? READERS!!
Since this is really a Health/Wellness Blog on Wednesday, I'll talk about my favorite medical moments. There are some duzzies!!
