Chicken and French Toast at Honey Butter Fried Chicken: Brunch that will have you wanting more
I love chicken and waffles. Seriously, what’s not to love? You start with a piece of chicken breast. You slice it and put it on top of a waffle. Dunk it in maple syrup. Voila! A little savory and a little sweet. Delicious!!
My addiction to chicken and waffles started in Southern California. I went to the world-famous Roscoes Chicken and Waffles. From the first bite, I was hooked.
When my family moved to Chicago, I occasionally looked for a place that served it, but I either was shut out or it was a location too far away. About fifteen years ago, my daughter alerted me to a new Chicken & Waffles restaurant. The name of it escapes me, but it was in our neighborhood. She had been hearing my rants about the dish for years. This was my opportunity to prove to her the greatness of C&W. Sadly, their version was horrible. I wasn’t the only one who thought this. The restaurant closed within a few months.
That brings us to this month.
When it comes to fried chicken, one of the major names in the Chicago area is Honey Butter Fried Chicken. They’re somewhat legendary on the city’s northwest side. It’s chicken and you add some honey butter to it or on a biscuit. What could go wrong?
They’ve now opened a second location, in Glencoe. I was checking out their menu and noticed they have a weekend brunch. One of the dishes is chicken and french toast—not quite waffles, but close. Let's give it another chance. It was brunchtime in Glencoe.
What you got were a few chicken strips with two pieces of French toast. The chicken was so tender that you only needed your fork to cut it. It was tasty enough that you would be happy to eat it on its own. But, then you add the French toast, with some honey butter and maple syrup. Wow! Kids, it’s party time for your taste buds.
The cost—only $14.95. I loved this dish so much that I almost ordered a second serving. You can get this only on the weekend from 10-3. So if you’re looking for a nice breakfast treat that won’t break you financially, head to either location of Honey Butter Fried Chicken. You’ll thank me afterward.
