Did Dylan Sell Out
Like most of America, yesterday I'm watching the Super Bowl. By the end of the 3rd quarter it's mostly background noise. Then I hear a familiar sound. I look at the screen. Is that Bob Dylan? He's doing a Chrysler commercial? Looks like him...sounds like him, too. Maybe it's a Dylan impersonator? Is there such a thing? No...it's the real Bob Dylan. WTF is going on? Dylan doesn't do commercials..does he?
After the game, I'm checking out Facebook. I'm not the only one in shock. Lot's of wtf comments. Some "Has Hell froze over".
I did a little digging. It's not Bobby's first time at this rodeo. A recent commercial for Jeep Cherokee. In 2007, he's selling Cadillac's...apparently he likes cars. He did one for Victoria Secret, too.
It wasn't even his first Super Bowl spot. He was a part of a Pepsi ad in 2009. Last night he was in two spots. His song "I Want You" was selling Chobani yogurt.
Where have I been? I had no idea about this?
Remember the fallout from when he went electric? OMG what is this world coming too?
The Beatles music sold gym shoes...we got over it.
Bob Seger was approached by Chevy to use his song "Like A Rock" in their commercials. He held out. Then two things changed his mind. An auto worker asked when he was going to for them? There was also a 14 million dollar check. Seger was in the truck selling business. No problem!!
For some reason we hold Dylan to a higher standard. He was the first real voice of our generation.
I couldn't find out how much he's being paid to sell products. I did find his net worth at about $80 million.
I guess there's some disillusionment because for some reason we hold him to a higher standard.
Turns out he's just a regular guy. Bob's just trying to make a living.
