Does God Give a Damn About Sports
It's time for another weekend of football. We also have hockey and basketball going on. We just finished baseball on Wednesday. Lots of sports. Lots of prayers.
At any given time you can tune in and see a major league baseball player cross himself before coming up to hit. An NBA player doing the same thing before shooting a free throw. At the end of an NFL game, you'll see players in a circle, holding hands, gathered in prayer.
I wonder if any of those things help? Does God really care about who wins a game? Does she care about a player making a catch as opposed to dropping the ball? How do you explain Tim Tebow?
To answer these questions, you need to decide on whether God really does exist.
In college, I majored in Philosophy. We spent years trying to prove the existence of God. I think we failed.
But for the sake of this argument, let's say there is a God. It then comes down to this....if God cared about sports how did the Boston Red Sox win the World Series over the SAINT Louis CARDINALS? Why did Alabama beat NOTRE DAME to win the last college football championship? Explain that one Touchdown Jesus!
What happens when two religious institutes face off? How does God decide a winner between Loyola and DePaul? Flip a coin?
I can go on and on with more examples, but it's time to get ready for the NFL pre-game shows.
However, if God really cared about sports, how do you explain 108 years of losing for the Cubs? I mean c'mon!!!!
And yet...the Hail Mary desperation pass at the end of a football game seems to work more often than you would think. Ask Pat Fitzgerald!!
Hmmmmm....makes ya think.
