Donald Trump has a better chance to be re-elected in 2020 than being impeached and convicted
Pretty strange week in Trumpville....even for Trumpville.
It was just seven days ago that we saw Donald in Helsinki, with his BFF Vlad Putin. After spending two hours alone together, the two buds stood behind podiums and chatted with reporters. Donnie shockingly took the side of the Russians at the expense of his own intelligence department. No collusion, fake news, Russia didn't do because Putin said so and I believe him, yada, yada, yada. We've heard it all before.
The next day he backtracked, then backtracked on that, then more backtracking and finally inviting his BFF to Washington. It made your head spin like Linda Blair in "The Exorcist"
The immediate reactions were amazing. The Democrats were predictable. We heard the same words we always hear: impeachment and treason. The ones from Republicans were more interesting and shocking. Let's look at some:
Jeff Flake: "I never thought I would see the day when our American President would stand on the stage with the Russian President and place blame on the United States for Russian aggression. This is shameful."
Marco Rubio: "Putin made a point of saying, ‘I wanted him to win. He clearly understood how that would be perceived in American politics. He knows that at least 50 percent of the country would hear him say that and say, 'We told you so, there was collusion,' and the like. That was not by accident."
Mitch McConnell: "We believe the European Union counties are our friends and the Russians are not,” McConnell told reporters. “We understand the Russian threat."
John McCain: "Today’s press conference in Helsinki was one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory. But it is clear that the summit in Helsinki was a tragic mistake. President Trump proved not only unable, but unwilling to stand up to Putin. He and Putin seemed to be speaking from the same script as the president made a conscious choice to defend a tyrant against the fair questions of a free press, and to grant Putin an uncontested platform to spew propaganda and lies to the world."
WOW!!! Lot's of powerful words. Did any powerful actions follow? Nothing! Nada! Zip! Were you surprised? Did you expect anything different?
When asked about repercussions such as being censured or holding off on confirming a Supreme Court nominee, Flake said no...no need to go that far. And this is from someone who is retiring from the Senate and has nothing to lose.
Can you guess why nothing has or is going to happen? Of course you can....it's because more than 80% of Republican voters approved of what occurred in Helsinki. They love the way Trump "handled" Putin. If you're a Republican up for election in November, are you going to piss off these voters who are your only chance to remain in office? Of course, you aren't. You're silly and/or naive if you thought that had a chance of occurring.
So that brings us to November and the mid-term elections. It's very possible the Democrats can gain a majority in the House. It's a mid-term year which generally favors the party not in power. Us anti-Trumpers are angry and hopefully will come out in force and elect a lot of Democrats. The question is if the Democrats gain a majority, will there be impeachment? The answer is YES, YES, YES!
It takes just a simple majority to impeach a President. That magic number is 218. If there are that many House Democrats when the new session of congress starts in January 2019, then I'm predicting the impeachment of Donald Trump by the end of the year.
Sounds pretty great, right? Not so fast! We still have the conviction part of the program.
Flipping the Senate this November won't be so easy. Sure the Democrats need to only flip a couple of seats to take control, but they also have many more seats up for grab this coming election. Let's say this happens and we'll even give them a few extra wins and call the new makeup of the Senate 55-45 for the Democrats. It's takes a 2/3 super majority of the Senate to convict. Where are you going to find the extra twelve votes? You really don't think twelve Republican Senators are going to vote to remove a President that is beloved by their voting public, do you? Again, you're silly and/or naive if you think that has a chance of occurring.
And all this is takes us up to the year 2020. Guess what happens then? Yeah, another Presidential election. Guess who is going to run for re-election? Yeah, Donald Trump. Guess who is going to be still pissed off that Democrats tried to remove their man. Yeah, it's those more than the 80% of those Republican voters who didn't care about the Trump-Putin thing. Btw, surveys also show that they also don't care about what happens in the Mueller investigation. Like Donnie once said, he really could shoot someone and his people won't stop loving him. And after all this happens, guess who is going to come out and vote in record numbers? Yeah, those 80% of pissed off Republican Donald Trump supporters.
Voila....re-elected!
Scary? Ummm yeah it's scary AF!!! Do I really believe this scenario is possible? Abso F'ing lutely!!!
I hope I'm wrong. I'm down on my knees praying I'm wrong...and I'm not a praying type of guy. But if I'm not, I won't say I told you so because I'll be somewhere in Canada and it's too far away for anyone to hear me. Does anyone know if Toronto is warmer in the winter than Chicago?
