Donald Trump or Muddy Waters: Who do you want on your building?
It's Thursday, June 8, 2017. Two very different events occurred today.
First we had the Senate testimony of the former Director of the FBI James Comey. It was pretty compelling stuff but not as great as I thought it was going to be. How it went for President #45 probably depends on what side of the political spectrum you belong to. I didn't hear anything that's going to get Don impeached, at least not yet. I also didn't hear anything that vindicates him like his new mouthpiece said. Hey, Trump still has his job so it's probably a good day for him.
Next we had the dedication of the Muddy Waters mural in downtown Chicago. Muddy is one of the seminal figures in music history. His move from Mississippi to Chicago and his electrification of the blues still influences music today. So many forms of rock, jazz, soul and hip-hop music wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Muddy and his colleagues at Chess Records. The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin are among the many who have been influenced by Muddy.
This acknowledgement of Muddy was long overdue considering he died in 1983. They didn't call him the "Godfather of Chicago Blues" for nothing.
It was a nice ceremony. Two of Muddy's sons played some music and there were a few speeches. Maybe there should have been less talking and more guitar but all in all it was a nice hour.
The ceremony is over and it's time to head for home. I walked around for a bit and passed this building. UGH! SIGH! Kind of appropriate though. My day had gone full circle and it was only 1pm.
It did get me thinking though. If you had a building, what would you want on it? A beautiful mural of a legendary musician or the name of the (it pains me to write this but) President of the United States? Actually, I think a name isn't enough. Trump needs a picture that would remind us of what he and his family is all about. How about this one? What do you think?
