Dress like Roy Orbison for Melanoma Monday
It's just another Melanoma Monday. On the first Monday of May, dress like Roy Orbison. Dress in black. Do this to honor the ones lost to Melanoma. Do this to celebrate the survivors of this hideous disease.
You may be asking, why black? Actually, I was the one wondering, so I did a little Google search and found this:
Why the Black Ribbon to represent melanoma awareness? Melanoma means "black tumor." Black is also the color of the warrior's mood when going into battle and the melanoma patient is in the battle for their life.
I'm sure a lot of people will be uncomfortable with some of those words, especially warrior and battle. My feelings have always been that the person dealing with whatever disease they have has the right to use whatever words that makes them feel comfortable and empowered.
That's why all of us in the Melanoma world will be wearing black today. But that's not the only thing we should be wearing. In addition to your black clothes, make sure you put on some sunscreen. Nothing keeps you safer from skin cancer than sunscreen. You should also be wearing good sunglasses, like Roy. Most people do not realize that you can get Melanoma in your eyes. Trust me, removing cancer from there is not a surgical procedure anyone would want to have.
So do your best Orbison and put on black to help celebrate or remember our Melanoma people. You Got It!
