Election day 2019: Vote Chicago!
Happy election day, Chicago. Today's the day we elect a new Mayor. Today's the day we make a much needed change.
Chicago, while still a great city, has taken plenty of hits to its reputation in recent years. Violence, poverty, schools and racism are at the top of the list of deserved complaints about the city.
Van Dyke, Smollett, Foxx, Alvarez, McCarthy, Johnson, Burke, RAHM!!!
How about the cities infrastructure? Have you taken a ride on the CTA lately? Are there enough potholes on the streets for you?
Here's a photo of the newly repaired Blue Line-Belmont station. It cost seventeen million dollars to do this. It's very pretty, but where is the elevator to make the station handicap accessible?
All of this and more is why today's election is so important. It's why you have to get out to your poll and cast your vote.
Five weeks ago, the city had the first election in this process. Only thirty-five percent of those eligible to vote, showed up to cast a ballot. I almost understand the apathy...almost. There were fourteen candidates to choose from. They were kind of a blah group. There wasn't much excitement about any of them. People had a hard time making a choice. I didn't make my decision until I walked into the voting booth.
Also, in February, it was obvious the none of the fourteen was going to get fifty percent of the vote. Having a runoff election was inevitable. But now we're down to the final two. The choice should be easier. There's enough of a difference between Lori Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle that you should be able to make a decision.
I'm not going to tell you who to vote for; I'm just going to tell you to do your duty as a citizen and vote. It's your one opportunity to have your voice heard. It's your one opportunity to make a difference. Too much is at stake. Sitting this one out is not acceptable. Thirty-five percent is embarrassing. We can do better. We have to do better.
The polls are now open. C'mon Chicago, you can do it. Just vote!
