Foo Fighters at Wrigley Field: "NIGHT TWO"
I'm looking to the sky to save me Looking for a sign of life Looking for something help me burn out bright
The year is 1994. Nirvana is one of the biggest bands in the world. On April 5th, it all came to an end when the face of the band, Kurt Cobain, committed suicide. Their drummer, Dave Grohl, had to make a decision on what was the next step for his music career. He moved out front from his drum kit, picked up a guitar and became the front man for his new band.
It's twenty-four years later. Foo Fighters has been going strong for more than two decades. Dave Grohl is at the top of the music world and at the top at his music game.
Foo Fighters brought their 2018 Concrete and Gold tour to Wrigley Field for two nights of sold out shows. The last time they played Wrigley, Grohl was recovering from a broken leg and spent much of that night sitting. He made it clear that they were making up for that this time out.
"NIGHT TWO! NIGHT TWO! Do you like rock and roll? It's going to be a long fucking night of rock and roll!"
Those are the words that Grohl used as he hit the stage running....and I mean running. From the opening songs, "All My Life" and "Learn to Fly", the crowd was up on their feet and never sat down. It was more than two hours of rock and roll....LOUD rock and roll....how it's meant to be.
"This is a fucking loud stadium rock and roll show!" That was an understatement! And yeah...Dave dropped a lot of f-bombs. Maybe the most heard at Wrigley Field since Herman Franks was the Cubs manager in the late 1970's. But that's also how rock and roll is supposed to be.
The set list for this tour hasn't changed and the concert was loaded with songs that even a casual Foo Fighters fan knows and can sing along with the band....yeah, there was plenty of that. "The Sky is a Neighborhood", "My Hero", "Best of You", "Times Like These" and "Everlong", along with some covers from Alice Cooper, Queen and Van Halen were highlights of a more than twenty song set.
It's understandable why Foo Fighters is one of the biggest bands in the world. Besides the music, Grohl has a big personality while appearing to be a regular guy. He can occasionally be found roaming the cities where his concerts take place. You can even find him on public transportation. He seems to be the type of guy that if you found him in your local bar, you could sit with him, have a beer and chat. Whether that's really true or he works to make it seem that way, it works for him.
The original title of this piece was going to be "The Foo Fighters are the best rock and roll band in the world." I'm not sure that's true but after last night, it's close. As Dave might say...it's fucking close.
I'm looking for a complication Looking 'cause I'm tired of trying Make my way back home When I learn to fly
