Foo Fighters new album 'Medicine at Midnight' left me feeling blah
It was 1994. The band Nirvana has dissolved following the suicide of Kurt Cobain. Their drummer, Dave Grohl, needed a new creative musical outlet. He formed the band Foo Fighters. A year later, their first self-titled album was released. It sold more than two million records worldwide. The Foo Fighters were off to a great start.
Hard to believe, but it's now almost twenty-seven years since the formation of the band. They've now released ten studio albums. That's more than three times the production of Grohl's previous band. All of them have been certified as gold or platinum albums. Worldwide they've sold more than thirty million albums. The band has also been honored by winning twelve Grammy awards. Foo Fighters are going as strong as ever!
Last week they released their newest album 'Midnight at Midnight.' Like most of their music, it's a rock and roll album with plenty of guitar. Normally, I'm all-in with that kind of record. That's one of the biggest reasons I'm a big fan of this band. But there was something about this album that left me feeling empty. When it was over, I thought okay...not great and not horrible. The only emotions I did have was feeling blah.
When I listen to a new album, I'm looking for a few songs that will hook me. I need some tunes that will keep me interested enough to want to hear them multiple times. But, I didn't find anything. Not a single song that made me want to return to this album. The song "Shame Shame" was close, but only because it had a David Bowie feel to it.
I also had the feeling the band wasn't all that interested in the music, too. I didn't feel the enthusiasm that I have with most of their previous records. Maybe the guys were just looking for something to do during the pandemic? Maybe they just wanted to give their fans something new to listen to during the pandemic? Maybe they're just looking for some new songs to play in concert, when and if we get back to live music? Maybe it's all of the above?
If you're a Foo Fighters fan and feel like I do about 'Medicine at Midnight', don't give up on the band. It's only one album. Plenty of legendary bands have made an album that makes you feel like this. They've moved forward to do some of their best work. My guess is Dave and the guys will do the same thing. I look forward to hearing your next album.
