Fuck Cancer
FUCK CANCER!
Feels good to say it, doesn't it? Do it again and loud so everyone can hear!
FUCK CANCER!
If your life has been affected by Cancer, raise your hand. Okay...every single one of us can put our hands down. Cancer has touched us all.
Close to a year ago I was at an event where two people became engaged. Great couple. Funny, smart, kind, loving. Oh yeah...the guy was a Cancer survivor, too.
He gets down on a knee and proposes in front of 100 people. How beautiful...how romantic. Nothing sweeter than love.
I leave the party and head to the train. I'm waiting on the platform and checking my email. The news is a childhood friend had died. Breast Cancer.
How can you go from happy smiles to tears of sadness in less than a minute? One word....Cancer.
Since that night I've lost two other friends to Cancer and found out yesterday about another who is now in Hospice care. Four in about ten months.
FUCK CANCER!
I'm sure you have your own story.....
Parents, children, siblings, cousins, friends, co-workers.
Teachers, doctors, lawyers, musicians, athletes, bus drivers, the guy behind the counter at McDonalds...even writers.
Lung Cancer, Breast Cancer, Pancreatic Cancer, Pediatric Cancer, Leukemia, Melanoma.
Take one or more from each above group and you'll have a story from someone in your life. It might even be your own story.
Why write about it today? The better question is why not write about it everyday!
So say it one more time. Yell it so your neighbors can hear.... and the person next to you at work can hear... and the person sitting next to you on the train can hear....because they'll understand, too. They'll probably yell with you.
It's for Lynn and Marcia. It's for Lewie and Pat. It's for Don and Donna. It's for all of us.
FUCK CANCER!
This is a Melanoma story I wrote a few months ago.
