Gary Player Gets Naked
It's time for ESPN Magazine's yearly body issue. Each year they take a group of athletes and shoot tasteful nude photos. Among this years models is 77 year old golfer Gary Player.
If you aren't familiar with Player, he's won 165 tournaments worldwide. He's the only golfer to win the career Grand Slam (winning all the Majors) on both the regular PGA and the Champions (formerly the Senior) tours. He's better known as part of Golf's Big Three, with Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. In most lists of the greatest all time golfers, he ranks in the Top 10.
Along with this photo comes an interview that talks about health and fitness. Let's take a look at some of his theories and see if and how it relates to to diseases such as Parkinson's.
One of his main theories is you need to keep moving. Retiring and sitting around all day watching tv leads to early deaths.
He feels obesity is our biggest problem. He's concerned about our foods and lack of exercise. His exercise program starts with 1200 sit-ups each day. Let me repeat that 1200 sit-ups!!! He's very big on core exercise. Says everything revolves around that. Plus he's been working with weights since early in his golf career....long before it became fashionable. One other thing is he will work every part of his body from his head down to his feet. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around those 1200 sit-ups.
His diet is 70% vegetarian. He has a juicer and starts each day with raw vegetables, turning them into juice. He eats mainly vegetables, fruits, nuts and whole wheat breads. He's concerned about additives that go into beef and chicken. He's been known to slip occasionally and drinks coffee each morning plus the occasional chocolate. He likes Snickers but the key is moderation.
Player feels strongly that this routine is what keeps him so healthy and alert at age 77. He thinks he can live to 100. He feels the body is made to live that long but the choices we make concerning food and exercise lowers that to around 80.
Can a Parkinson's patient relate to this? ABSOLUTELY!! Keep moving is a Parkinson's slogan. All of their fund raising walks are called Moving Days! The fruits, veggies and nuts rate very high on a Parkinson's patient's menu.
Is any of this surprising? Of course not!! Player's healthy lifestyle tips fits anyone. Is it easier to say than to actually do this? Of Course!!!
That's your health and wellness tips for a Sunday. I'm off to get a pizza. It'll be a small....moderation!!!
