Grape juice, blueberries and Sudoku...oh my
A couple nights ago I'm looking for some entertainment. Let's see what's on tv? Singing competition shows...nope. Friends reruns...nah. Politics...oh man, not again.
Hey, it's PBS. Look it's Pledge Week....again. They have good music shows during Pledge Week. Grateful Dead in Concert? Nope. Simon & Gar at Central Park? Not tonight. Maybe the Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus with Jethro Tull & John Lennon? Uh uh.
OMG...it's Suzy Orman and Wayne Dyer. DAMN!
Wait, I have a third PBS channel. I don't have HBO, Showtime or Netflix but three PBS channels, of course.
Hmmm...there's a show talking about memory and the brain and how to keep it healthy. Okay now, I'm good with that. It's a subject I have an interest in learning more about. One of the things that worries me about Parkinson's Disease is memory loss and dementia. Plus, I have some big time short term issues. There have been times I sit down to write a blog piece and forget the topic I'm writing about. Scary! Lots of times, I will Google something and I forget what I wanted to research. Scarier.
I don't know if it's Parkinson's, or aging, or a combination of both; but either way I can use all the help I can get. In addition to memory issues, I have a pretty short attention span. This guy is going to have to reach me fast. He has ten minutes at most...probably closer to five.
Remember back in college when you had those lecture classes. Big classrooms, lots of students, one dude talking, no interaction, just taking notes. BORING! That's what this show was like. One guy speaking, no visuals. Man. C'mon! He starts talking about food. Okay, you've got me now. I like food.
"Did you know that drinking two servings of grape juice a day helps stave off Alzheimer's and Dementia?"
I didn't know that but it's kind of interesting. Plus, for some reason I have three bottles of grape juice in my fridge. I'm not sure why or how that happened...maybe it's that damn memory thing...but I'm good to go. Next?
"Blueberries are one of the best foods for brain health."
I did know about this. Antioxidants. I love blueberries. They've been on sale at Jewel for a couple of months. Three bucks for a quart. I've been eating a lot of blueberries. So far so good. What's next?
"Let's talk about puzzles and games..."
What I heard was blah blah blah blah blah. His five minutes were up. I did hear the word Sudoku before changing the channel and I knew where he was going. Things like Sudoku work the brain. Keeps it active. Just a few minutes ago I heard Ray Romano talk about how he goes to a website where they have all kinds of puzzles and games. Ray said he was getting older and did it to keep his mind active. Good man.
So that's a good amount of info for five minutes. Grape juice, blueberries and puzzles...I'll give it try.
I wonder what else is on PBS? Hey, look at this....Joe Bonamassa at Red Rocks doing a tribute to Muddy and Howlin Wolf. I'm good for ten minutes.
I almost forgot I had written about memory issues in the past. Here's a piece about the game Simon.
