“Let’s start at the beginning. It's a very good place to start.”
Those words, from the song “Do-Re-Mi”, were the first ones I wrote in this space. The date was May 11, 2013. Eleven years ago today.
ELEVEN!!!!!!
Wow! I never would have guessed that.
SEVENTEEN HUNDRED and THIRTY-NINE POSTS—and wow are my fingers tired.
Talking about being tired, I hate to admit it but I’m getting somewhat tired of writing this column. I first noticed this a few months ago. It’s now taking me longer to write a piece; I procrastinate about doing it. Even today, I found something to do before finishing this one. I've also noticed that they're published later in the day than I used to. It's not like there is a strict deadline for this but I’m just not as enthusiastic to get it done as I was eleven years ago.
I take all of this as a sign.
Also, I have some other writing exercises I want to explore. Sure it can be done while continuing to do this, but I want to concentrate on the new things.
So on this anniversary, I’m giving you my notice. It'll be more than two weeks—a lot more. I still have some things I want to work on here. There are some concerts and restaurants to review and an election campaign to write about—and that’ll be good for plenty of snarky remarks.
And talking about the election, that will be the end date for this. Not exactly election day, but I’m waiting for the next inauguration because win or lose, you know Trump is going to cause some shit. It won't be great for the country but it'll be great for writers.
So we still have six or so months to deal with all of this but today is a day to celebrate the last eleven. I'm blowing out the candles for the last time right now. Even at my age, I can handle eleven of them.
Happy final Anniversary —we won't see you at this time next year.
What a wonderful ride of eleven years. I look forward to the next 6 months and wish you well in your other pursuits.
