Hey Billy Kennedy and Buddy Hield's mom: God doesn't care who wins an NCAA Basketball tournament game.
The madness returns. Today starts the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Men's basketball tournament. It's about to get serious.
When we left you on Sunday, the Texas A&M Aggies had just completed a comeback for the ages. They were down 12 points with forty-five seconds left in the game. They tied the game and went on to beat Northern Iowa in double overtime. It was a miracle.
Here's how A&M head coach Billy Kennedy described the win: "To God be the glory, that's all I can say. That's a blessed win. God has blessed for this win. They got blessed last game, we got blessed this game."
In a game two nights earlier, Northern Iowa defeated the University of Texas on a last second half court shot. WOW...two miracles in three days. According to Kennedy, God blessed one team on Friday but then two nights later said....okay, that's enough for them. Someone else gets a blessing today.
Hmmm......was it in God's plan to have Northern Iowa commit five turnovers in the last half minute? Maybe! Maybe not! Who really knows!
But that wasn't the only blessing on this day. In the earlier game, Oklahoma was playing VCU. It was a tough battle. Favored Oklahoma held the lead most of the way but never could pull away.
The people in the above photo are Buddy Hield and his mother, Jackie. Hield is OU's star player and is favored to win the Wooden award as national player of the year. His mom is at all the games. Buddy had a rough first half, scoring just seven points. During the second half, mom Jackie left her seat. She does this occasionally. She finds a place to be alone and say some prayers.
It must have worked because Buddy scored twenty-nine points in the second half and Oklahoma won the game 85-81.
OMG!!!! Two miracles in the same arena in the same day and three for the weekend. I guess it was God's time to be in Oklahoma City.
Now I'm not making fun of anyone's beliefs or religion...okay I guess I am. But c'mon, really...doesn't God have better things to do than care about basketball games or any sports event? If he did, wouldn't the Chicago Cubs have won a World Series in the last 108 years? Just sayin'.
Back to Billy Kennedy for a moment. Five years ago he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. He's been healthy enough to continue to coach his team. Now that's what I call really being blessed. If Billy really has an in with the big guy or girl, I would hope he would use his prayers to help find a cure for PD or Cancer or whatever disease needs curing. Hell, cure them all (sorry for the Hell reference).
Tonight it gets interesting. Texas A&M plays Oklahoma, in Anaheim, California. It's the prayers and beliefs of Billy Kennedy vs Buddy's mom, Jackie. When the game ends, someone will be questioning their faith.
Here's a piece I wrote a couple of years ago. I'm still looking for proof.
