How Food Runners makes 5,000 meals each day to help feed the needy in San Francisco
San Francisco is one of the most beautiful cities in the United States. It's also one of the most expensive places to live. That's one of the reasons this San Francisco Chronicle story estimates there are close to 7,000 homeless people living on the street and in shelters on any given night.
Getting nutrition to these people is a big problem.
Almost thirty years ago. Mary Risley came up with this idea on how to get food that was going to waste and get it to people who needed it the most. That was the start of Food Runners.
She's put together a group of over 250 volunteers that collects food from more than 450 restaurants and grocery stores. They get 15 tons of excess food and Food Runners is able to provide 5,000 meals a day to people who may not have been able to eat.
Risley was named by the Chronicle as one of the most influential people in the Bay Area and she also has been awarded The James Beard Foundation's "Humanitarian of the Year" award.
