How many lives could Bob Woodward have saved?
More than six million American cases of Covid-19. More than 190,000 Americans have died.
"You just breathe the air and that's how it's passed. And so that's a very tricky one. That's a very delicate one. It's even more deadly than your strenuous flus. This is dangerous stuff."
Those are the words President of the United States Donald Trump said to legendary journalist Bob Woodward, in February 2020. It was one of eighteen interviews for Woodward's new book, "Rage."
At the same time, Trump was preaching to the American public that the virus was no worse than the flu. Remember Trump telling us that the virus would disappear when the weather began to warm up. It would be gone by April. Trump deliberately lied to the American people about how deadly the virus would become. Trump said, "I wanted to play it down."
He played it down to play up his chances of being re-elected.
Donald Trump's lies are nothing new. We've seen thousands of them over the almost four years of his presidency? We don't like them, but we're used them. We've come to expect them. However, Bob Woodward knew all this was a lie. Yet, he said nothing. He could have told us through the outlets of his newspaper, the Washington Post or the network news organization of his choosing. Still, he said nothing. Bob Woodward kept quiet for more than seven months. He kept quiet until the release of his book.
Yes, that's his right to do so and yes, he probably was granted the Trump interviews under the condition that nothing was published in the Post. But, ask yourself these two questions: How do you feel now knowing about this if you are one of the millions directly affected by Covid-19? How many lives could Bob Woodward have saved?
More than six million American cases of Covid-19. More than 190,000 Americans have died.
