I Can't Help Falling.......
I'VE FALLEN AND I CAN'T UP!!!
1.) On my Facebook newsfeed, I get blurbs from the National Parkinson's Disease Foundation. Yesterday they informed me it was National Parkinson's Awareness Week. May was Parkinson's Awareness month. It's June and we're down to a week. Looks like we'll get a day in July and after that we'll be on our own.
2.) Upon closer look, it really is Fall Awareness Week. They picked the right guy to tell at the right time. Since the initial sign of symptoms, this has been my biggest fear. I deal pretty good with the other things, but my lack of balance scares me on a daily basis. Sometime I feel like Jimmy Stewart in Vertigo.
3.) Fall Awareness is not just for Parkinson's patients, but their target group is ages 60 & up. More good news, I'm in two categories, and for most of my readers, you're in that demographic, too...or close. Welcome to my world!!
4.) They offer some simple tips to avoid falling. Should we see how I'm doing?? (a) Use railings when taking stairs-DING DING DING!! (b) Have bars by the toilet and shower. (c) If, needed, a shower chair helps avoid falls- let's combine b & c. BUZZ BUZZ BUZZ!!! I know most home falls occur in the bathroom, but the day I need a chair in the shower is when we'll need to do some serious re-evaluations.
5.) Finally, I was heading home on the train. My stop has some very steep stairs. I usually wait until everyone passes me and that way I can take my time down. It's safer for everyone. I start down and see a guy who look like he was losing his balance and was about to fall. Suddenly he reaches out and grabs his cell phone from out of the air. Apparently he almost dropped it while checking his emails or his Facebook status while walking down the stairs. Have I ever mentioned how much I hate people who do that? I know it's bad Karma to wish something like that on anybody but c'mon....seriously...is any Tweet that important??
It's only Wednesday so we still have more than half of Fall Awareness week to go. Enjoy
