March 18, 1995.
After being part of three consecutive NBA championships, Michael Jordan had retired from the Chicago Bulls two seasons earlier.
During his so-called retirement, Jordan decided he wanted to try professional baseball. Bulls and White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf bought into this and Mike spent a season playing minor-league baseball, in Birmingham, Alabama.
It was close to the start of the regular baseball season. Major league players were still on strike from the previous season. The owners decided that they would use minor league players who would be willing to cross picket lines. Jordan wanted no part of this; it marked the end of his short-lived baseball career.
It was time to return to the sport where he was already a legendary figure. He announced his return by sending a fax…remember faxes and fax machines? It was a simple announcement with only two words…
I’M BACK!!
Well, kids…the reason for this remembrance is I’ve been gone from these pages for the last month. I had surgery on my left arm on March 1. The last thirty days have been spent working on recovering. It’s going pretty well, although I still have pain that limits me on certain everyday things you take for granted. But, typing on a computer isn’t one of those things, so I’m ready to return.
Unlike Mike, I’m going to take it a bit slower. I won’t be scoring fifty-five points in my second game back. I have a couple of things that I want to write next week, and then we’ll see how it’s going and move on from there.
MJ did win three consecutive championships upon his return. Hmmm…what would be the equivalent here? Watch this space.
Glad to see you back, Howie! I always enjoy your writing. See you soon.
