I'm in a poverty state of mind
It was so easy living day by day Out of touch with the rhythm and blues
Ben Carson is the Secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. He made news the other day when he said that poverty was just a state of mind. It looks like Ben was out of touch with the rhythm and blues of poverty.
Carson grew up in poverty in Detroit. His family life improved by the time he was in high school but his family still relied on food stamps to get fed. Eventually he went to college and became a surgeon. It seems along the way, Ben forgot what it was like to struggle financially.
Ben thinks this man is living on the street because of his state of mind. It has nothing to do with a lack of living wage employment, lack of affordable housing or addiction problems
Ben thinks families living on food stamps and going to pantries is because of their state of mind. It has nothing to do with their having to decide what's more important, paying for food or paying for shelter.
"You take somebody with the wrong mind-set, you can give them everything in the world (and) they'll work their way right back down to the bottom," Carson said.
It comes down to reality And it's fine with me cause I've let it slide.
Ben Carson, with a lot of help, made it from the bottom to the top. When he got there, he lost his compassion. That's a bad trait for someone who's the head of HUD. Apparently Ben has lost his grip on reality.
The lyrics in bold are from Billy Joel's song "New York State of Mind"
