Is a knee on the neck for nine minutes and twenty-three seconds enough to convict Derek Chauvin?
The testimony is over. The prosecution has rested. So has the defense. The final arguments will come today. The judge will give his instructions. Finally, the jury will get the case and begin their deliberations.
How it goes is anyone's guess.
The evidence that the prosecution showed was overwhelming. The defense broke out all their tricks. A counterfeit twenty dollar bill, drug usage, heart disease, carbon monoxide poisoning. Anything to cast aspersions on the the character of George Floyd. Anything to make the jury believe that the cause of Floyd's death was something other than the knee to his neck.
But it all comes down to nine minutes and twenty-nine seconds. That's the amount of time Derek Chauvin had his knee on the neck of George Floyd.
Normally, that one piece of evidence would be enough to convict. These aren't normal times and this isn't a normal trial. Think back to the number of times a police officer has been ruled innocent of a crime of this type. It occurs often.
We should know shortly of justice will be served. But, don't be surprised because it only takes one person to turn this into a hung jury and a mistrial. We then get to do this again a few months from now.
Nine minutes and twenty-three seconds? Will it be enough.
