It's past time to get the guns
"The other piece of legislation is the crime bill. As of today, it no longer exists. I'm throwing it out. I'm throwing it out and writing a law that makes sense. You cannot address crime prevention without getting rid of assault weapons and hand guns. I consider them a threat to national security, and I will go door-to-door if I have to, but I'm gonna convince Americans that I'm right, and I'm gonna get the guns. " Andrew Shepard-"The American President"
There's a serious disconnect on how us libs and you not so libs feel about guns. We want serious gun control laws and would be willing to settle for strong background checks. You think any change is threatening your second amendment rights and really feel like we want to take your guns away.
Well guess what...you people on the far right really were right all along. It's time to get the guns...all of them!
I admit that I hate guns. It doesn't matter what you use them for, I hate them. I've never fired a gun anywhere. I've never held one in my hand. I've never touched one. I don't think I've even seen one up close. I'm fine with this and have no plans to do any of this for the rest of my life. I feel no need to do this and the further away I get from a gun, the safer I feel.
Until recently, I didn't feel a need to take away your guns. While I think your interpretation of the second amendment goes way too far, I didn't think we should take away one of your basic rights. If you felt you needed guns to protect your family, it was okay with me. I hope you keep them locked up where your children can't get to them. If you want to hunt helpless animals, well it's a reprehensible act but I'm not taking away your right to do it. If you like to target or skeet shoot, that was fine with me, too. I can think of more interesting things to do with my time but whatever works for you is fine.
All of that has changed since Valentine's Day!!
After the gun murders at Stoneman Douglas High School, the students were the ones doing all the serious talking. It looked like the politicians were listening and promising changes, even if they were minor ones. No more thoughts and prayers.
But then our leaders found a multitude of reasons not to do anything: a. It was a failure of the students who knew the shooter was dangerous but never said anything. b. It was a failure of the FBI who knew about this but failed to do anything. c. It was a failure of the Sheriff's department, who had an armed guard at the school who acted as a coward.
Anything and everything but what really was the cause of seventeen dead in Florida...Guns! Plain and simple! The gun killed all seventeen of them.
The final straw for me is when the head of the United States said if he was around, he would have rushed into the school, without being armed, and would have saved the day. Yeah, sure...a guy who gets five military deferments for bone spurs is going to be a hero.
Enough is more than enough!!!
We need a serious change and we need it now! These mass murders, whether it's at a school, nightclub, concert or a church, do not happen in other countries other than this one. The reason is simple. They don't have the easy access to guns that we do. I know we like to think that we know best but all our dead citizens show that we don't.
We have to get the guns...all of them. If you think your right to kill elephants is more important than a child's right to be safe at school, you're wrong. If you think your right to shoot a target is more important than someone safely worshiping at a church, synagogue or mosque, you're wrong.
The November elections are just eight months away. It's time to become one issue voters. It's really past time because pro-gun people have been doing that a long time. If you see a candidate taking money from the NRA, you need to vote against them. If you see a candidate who wants to vote against stricter background checks, you need to vote against them. If you see a candidate who values anything about guns more than the safety of our children, you need to vote against them.
The quote in the first paragraph is from the movie "The American President." There's another quote from this film that fits this dilemma, "We've got serious problems and we need serious people. This is a time for serious people and your fifteen minutes is up."
This is beyond a serious issue and we need serious people to help resolve this. November is really just fifteen minutes away. Can't wait!
