John Lennon, Mick Jagger and the circle of life
December 8th.
It's always a tough day. You can't help but think and maybe obsess about John Lennon on this day. It's the anniversary of his assassination and I tend to do the latter. I usually spend some...okay a lot...okay okay all of it listening to Beatles music. I know, not a lot different than what I normally do most days but I tend to go overboard on this day.
I always spend a lot of the day thinking about him. I go back to the early times and remember how exciting and how much fun it was when the Beatles and Lennon came on the scene. But it always ends up with that night in 1980 when he was killed. So sad! So senseless! A man known for preaching about peace taken in the most violent way.
I didn't understand it then and thirty-six years later, nothing about it has changed.
Thinking about John tends to wear me out. Mid-afternoon it was nap time. Decided to do a little net surfing before falling asleep. Hey look at this....Mick Jagger is a father....again! A new baby boy.
I knew this event was occurring. I even wrote about it, quite snarkily, last summer. I just wasn't expecting it to happen yesterday.
The timing seems very bizarre to me. John & Mick go back with each other to the beginning of their careers. All those early British rockers knew each other. They went to see each other play regularly. Although there was competition between the bands, there was camaraderie, too. When one group made it, it opened doors wider for the others. The Beatles and Lennon even gave the Stones and Jagger an early song "I Wanna Be Your Man" to record. Just recently, the Stones did a cover of "Come Together" at their concert in the California desert.
I can go on and on and on. There's a ton of connections between the Beatles and the Stones and also between Lennon and Jagger.
But yesterday has to be the ultimate connection. While we're mourning the death of one, the other is bringing a new life into the world. It doesn't get much more Circle of Life than that!
For Mick, this is child number eight. I haven't found a name for the new Jagger offspring. How does John Jagger sound?
I've written a lot about Mick and the Stones this year. This one is about how they are still relevant in 2016.
