Let's not feel too bad about Liz Cheney losing her election
“Two years ago, I won this primary with 73 percent of the vote. I could easily have done the same again. The path was clear. But that would have meant following Donald Trump’s lies about the election. That is a path I would not take.”
Here are the final results:
Harriet Hageman 113,025 votes. 66.3% Liz Cheney 49,206 votes 28.9%
Cheney’s career in the U.S. House of Representatives will come to an end in January. I bet most of you didn’t realize she’s only held that elected position since 2016. Six years. You can do a lot of damage in six years.
Most of us liberal types respect Liz for the stand she has taken against Donald Trump. She has shown integrity while being one of the leaders of the January 6 committee. It’s great she’s put saving our democracy at the expense of her career in the House. Not many of us would do that. Certainly, no Republican politician, other than Adam Kinzinger, has shown they care an iota about this.
But, in spite of this, don’t forget who Liz Cheney really is.
During the four years of the Trump administration, Cheney voted with the former guy 93% of the time. NINETY-THREE!! That was more than Elise Stefanik, who took Cheney’s place in Republican leadership. It was even more than that nutjob from Arizona, Paul Gosar.
Here are just a few of the things that Liz voted against:
A bipartisan infrastructure package, the restoration of portions of the Voting Rights Act, an expansion of the Affordable Care Act and the federal government being able to negotiate lower prices on prescription drugs. All things that would have helped her constituents in Wyoming.
She also voted multiple times against any kind of gun safety legislation.
Oh yeah, let’s not gloss over her opposition to same-sex marriage. This led to a falling out with her sister Mary, who is part of the LGBTQ community. Even her dad, former Vice-President Dick Cheney never went this far. Liz did try to walk this back as recently as 2021 but never forget her original words on this subject:
“I do believe it’s an issue that’s got to be left up to the states. I do believe in the traditional definition of marriage.”
Look, I understand that Double H isn’t going to be any better than Cheney. She won the election by going all-in on Trump’s election lies. Who knows if she really believes it, most Republicans don’t, they just say it for their personal and political gain. I guess we’ll find out starting next year. But, as far as her governing policies, it’s hard to be further radical right than Liz Cheney. Hell, it’s almost impossible.
So Liz, thanks for trying to take down Don. I appreciate it and so does most of the country. But, I’m not going to miss or forget all those votes over the last six years. I bet your sister also won’t forget it.
