Mia’s Cantina in Wheeling: Chocolate makes everything taste better
As Monty Python once said, “And now for something completely different.”
It’s tiring writing about the same topics all the time…year after year after year. I decided to try something new to keep things fresh and interesting…at least for me.
In 2024, I’ll be writing a series of restaurant reviews. Once a month, I’ll be reviewing a new restaurant. It probably won’t be new to the world, but it'll be a place I’ve never eaten.
The series begins with Mia’s Cantina, in Wheeling, Illinois.
The reason we ended up going there was simple. My daughter gave us a gift certificate for Hannukah. She said she always gets the enchiladas. Free food with lots of cheese always works for me.
It began with the traditional chips and salsa. The chips were warm and crisp but the salsa was a bit watery.
We ordered tamales for an appetizer. They were very doughy but were covered in a dark mole sauce that saved the dish.
Then came the main dishes. I had two cheese and a ground beef enchilada. If I had to do it again, I would have had chicken instead of beef. The enchiladas were covered in the same dark mole sauce as the tamales. The combination of the semi-sweet chocolate mole with the saltiness of the cheese made this a tasty dish.
My partner had a veggie burrito. I'm not big on vegetables so I can't tell you how it tasted, but I know she enjoyed it. Plus, the portion was huge. She only ate half of it so there was enough to take home for another meal.
The price of the meal was extremely reasonable. The most expensive item costs only sixteen dollars. The total was around fifty bucks so when you add in our gift certificate, it was almost FREE!! That always works!
In addition to Wheeling, Mia Cantina has a location in Mount Prospect. If you’re looking for cost-efficient tasty Mexican food this could be a go-to place. Make sure you get the mole sauce because chocolate makes everything taste better.
