Mike Pence celebrates Memorial Day by telling West Point cadets to get ready to go to war
And it's one, two, three What are we fighting for? Don't ask me, I don't give a damn Next stop is Vietnam And it's five, six, seven Open up the pearly gates Well there ain't no time to wonder why Whoopee! we're all gonna die
Memorial Day 2019. It's day to honor those we've lost serving our country. While most of us will use this holiday to take a day off work, go to a parade, have a barbeque with friends/family or just relax; in reality Memorial Day should be spent in sad reflection over the young men and women who are no longer with us...a lot of them lost unnecessarily.
Yes, those soldiers lost during the Civil War and the two World Wars were saving our way of life here in the United States, but can we truly say the same about any war or conflict in the seventy-four since. Did we really need to be in Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq and other places across the globe. Were the people we lost there sacrificed for a legitimate cause? The ego of a politician or even worse, money and greed.
Come on Wall Street, don't be slow Why man, this is war au-go-go There's plenty good money to be made By supplying the Army with the tools of its trade But just hope and pray that if they drop the bomb They drop it on the Viet Cong
That's why it's so distasteful to see what our current Vice-President said last Saturday during his address to graduating West Point cadets:
"The world is a dangerous place. Some of you will join the fight against radical Islamic terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq. It is a virtual certainty that you will fight on a battlefield for America at some point in your life. You will lead soldiers in combat. It will happen. Some of you may even be called upon to serve in this hemisphere.”
Just another guy who didn't serve in the military who want to send others off to die. It was a day when they should have been celebrating the accomplishments of almost one thousand young people, Pence ruins the day for them and their families with his ominous remarks. His words are especially daunting considering his boss is talking about sending 1,500 new troops to the Middle East to combat a supposed threat from Iran.
But according to Pence, there's good news from this administration. "The commander in chief will always have your back. Mr. Trump is the best friend the men and women of our armed forces will ever have.” I'm sure those words will be comforting when they're heading out into needless dangerous situations.
On this Memorial Day, we should ignore everything that Pence said at West Point and starting treasuring our young military people. We need to do everything possible to keep them alive and thriving. We need to live this George McGovern quote:
“I'm fed up to the ears with old men dreaming up wars for young men to die in.”
Let's celebrate Memorial Day by remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Let's celebrate Memorial Day by making sure we don't have to remember anyone new. Mike Pence and all of us would be better off.
Come on mothers throughout the land Pack your boys off to Vietnam Come on fathers, and don't hesitate To send your sons off before it's too late And you can be the first ones in your block To have your boy come home in a box
