Move Like Jagger....it's Mick's Birthday.
I said Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, WOOOO!!! It's Mick Jagger's Birthday!! It's a big one, too. Mick turns 70. SEVENTY!! SEVENTY!!! Wow!!
How did this happen? It seems like just a few years ago that the Stones were starting out. Remember when Satisfaction came out? Remember when they were on Ed Sullivan and they had to change the words to "Let's Spend The Night Together"? Remember how when the Beatles were singing their catchy love tunes, Mick was singing about how "Mother's Little Helpers" helped her get through the day.
Mick was a bad boy!! There were other rock bad boys before him but Mick took it to a new level. The Beatles got to the US first and really paved the way for the Stones, but when Mick and they boys came here, they really kicked it up a notch or five.
Your parents didn't like the Beatles at first, but eventually some of them were won over. They never liked the Stones. The Stones were too much....of everything!! When Mick took the stage and started prancing from one side to the other, it just oozed sexuality. It was very raw. Elvis was the same way but Mick kicked that up a notch, too...or five!!
What's changed in the last 50 years for Mick? Has he slowed down? Is he still the bad boy?
The Stones are still touring regularly. Mick is still marching around the stage. It doesn't feel the same but cmon, he is 70 now. They do still push the envelope. Singing at the halftime show , at the Super Bowl, they were beeped for singing "you make a dead man come" during the song "Start Me Up". Seems a little tame compared to the early days but still how many bands get censored at the Super Bowl?
Mick is a lot more mainstream than he was in the early days...but who isn't! You may not think of him as a family man but he does have seven children....of course, they're with four different women. He hosts Saturday Night Live. You see him in charity music events. And in my favorite Mick moment, about 10 years ago, while they were touring in Chicago, I saw Mick and Charlie Watts, walk into a limo. Both were wearing suits like they were heading to the office. Mick being a regular guy...maybe.
So happy birthday Mick. Hopefully we can revisit this in another decade and see if anything is new. Keep on singing cuz it may be only rock and roll but we do like it!!
