My daughter picked a bad time to honeymoon in St. Croix
Last Sunday, my daughter got married to the love of her life. It was a wonderful, though emotional weekend. The next day they were off to start their life together by going on their honeymoon in St. Croix.
Sounds lovely, doesn't it? Nothing better than a romantic week on the beach. And it was for a few days. I'd see an occasional picture of the sand and water, the pool, and even on a boat with exotic drinks.
But yesterday while watching the news, I heard about a tropical storm in Puerto Rico. Fiona! I wondered how close PR was to St. Croix. Google says a little more than one hundred miles. Oh man, that sounds close to me. Time to send a text.
It turns out they were supposed to leave on Friday. FLIGHT CANCELED! Same story on Saturday. Same on Sunday. OY!!!
It reminded me of another wedding flight/storm story from seven years ago.
The same daughter and I were in Rochester, NY for the wedding of my nephew. Everything went well until the day after the wedding. There was a significant storm in Chicago. Flights were canceled hours in advance….except for mine.
I got on my plane heading for my first stop in Baltimore. So far, so good. The next stop is Chicago’s Midway Airport.
We took off for Chi-town and all went well until about forty-five minutes from landing. It started as light turbulence, but it slowly increased until the plane was shaking like nothing I'd ever been in before. I looked out the window and I could see lightning nearby. It turned out we were flying beside a tornado.
People were holding hands for support. The woman sitting next to me held her cross tightly. It was as if she was holding hands with Jesus.
I was scared but kept telling myself that commercial airplanes don't crash. And this one didn't! When we landed, people were applauding like in the movie Airport, when Dean Martin brought the plane down safely after Van Heflin set off a bomb.
But, back to my daughter and her husband….maybe they’ll get a flight today or maybe not. The weather doesn't look great. Eventually, it will clear up and they'll come home. At least for now they're in a hotel, safe and hopefully will make the best out of a bad situation.
What a way to start a marriage, but they will have a great story to tell their grandchildren. And talking about grandchildren……
