Nazi's, Art & The University of Oklahoma- Part Three
This story is getting good.
It started as a dispute between Leone Meyer trying trying to regain a painting from the Fred Jones Museum of Art at The University of Oklahoma. The painting was stolen from her family during World War 2, by Nazis. She wanted it returned to her family. The University said no and held firm in spite of public opinion.
It may have led to the museum director resigning. It did lead to the Oklahoma state legislature getting involved.
Yesterday the campus newspaper, The Oklahoma Daily, ran a story about how the museum also has 40 other paintings with Nazi regime connections. This Van Gogh portrait is one of those forty.
All this could have been avoided by doing the right thing, which was/is giving the painting back to the Meyer family. By doing this there would have been no involvement by the state government. There wouldn't have been an investigative piece by the newspaper. Everything would have gone under the radar.
The suit that the Meyer family has been dismissed. It was filed in a New York court and they ruled it didn't have jurisdiction on what should be an Oklahoma case. Still, that doesn't mean the University shouldn't give back the painting.
Sometimes you can't overcome Karma. I can't wait to see what happens next.
