New school female musicians show they can play the instrument during International Guitar Month
For the last two days, we’ve featured two old-school guitarists and a couple of middle-school guitar players. But how about the somewhat new kids on the block? These women play just as well as anyone. Let’s take a look:
It’s hard to believe but Sleater-Kinney is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary as a band. They’re now down to a twosome of Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker. Released in January, “Little Rope” is their eleventh studio album. From that album, this is “Hell.”
You know Brittany Howard from her four-time Grammy Award-winning band Alabama Shakes. They’ve been on hiatus since 2018 and Brittany is now out on her own as a solo act. Her latest album, released this past February is “What Now.”
From her days with Alabama Shakes, this is an SNL performance of “Hold On.”
I first fell in love with St. Vincent (Annie Clark) when she collaborated with Talking Head’s David Byrne. Their album “Love the Giant” was innovative and a classic from the moment it was released. Their tour in supporting the record received spectacular reviews. Here is a live version of “Who”, with some tasty guitar from her at the end of the song.
To close it out, one more tune to show how great their collaboration was. From Talking Heads, their classic “Wild Wild Life.”
Next weekend, we’ll look at a few great Blues guitarists.
