One word describes Donald Trump's attempt to repeal Obamacare: Cruel
When someone shows you who they are, believe them. Donald Trump showed us who he is decades ago.
The numbers on the coronavirus pandemic are surging. Cases and hospitalizations are now on the rise in half the U.S. states. Two and a half millions cases of coronavirus. More than forty million Americans have been furloughed or lost their jobs.
Donald Trump's response to this....let's repeal Obamacare. This latest attempt to can be described in one word. CRUEL!
Repeal and replace. Trump has been trying to get rid of Obamacare for almost four years. If anything has the name Obama on it, Trump wants it gone. Doing this was one of his 2016 presidential campaign's main talking points.
"I'm going to take care of everybody. Everybody's going to be taken care of much better than they're taken care of now. It's a beautiful picture."
Yeah! Everything in Don-world is bigger, better and beautiful. And if it replaces a historic signature Obama piece of legislation, so much the better.
Repeal and replace! The Trump administration has had four years to get this done. Nothing. Nada. Zip! The first two years, Don and his republican cronies had full control of the House and Senate. Nothing. Nada. Zip! They did come close to the repeal portion, but they Don couldn't capture the votes of Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and John McCain. Close, but again Nothing. Nada. Zip!
But that was just for the repeal. Remember the replace portion where everything was going to be bigger, better and beautiful? We've never heard anything about that plan. Not a single word. All he cared about was taking away the insurance of twenty million Americans. Doing something that despicable can be summed up in one word. CRUEL!
Now Trump is going to take another shot at repealing Obamacare. Last week, administration attorneys filed a brief with the Supreme Court asking them to invalidate the law and to repeal it. Not just portions of the law, the entire thing. That includes the part where no one can be denied insurance coverage because of pre-existing conditions. After promising that he would never touch that, he's going to try to torch that portion of the law, too. I guess it's just another lie among the thousands we've been told over the last few years. Wait until people apply for a new health insurance policy and check off the box that says they had coronavirus. Oh yeah, you know that will be treated as a pre-existing condition. Same as having had cancer or heart disease. You don't think insurance companies will use it to try to raise your rates? Pffft! Thanks, Don! CRUEL!
What most people don't understand is why is Trump doing this now? Why try to take away people's insurance four month before an election? I'm pretty sure you don't gain any additional votes by doing this, right? Even members of his own party are shocked by the timing of this. There's only one answer. Because Donald Trump is CRUEL!
In the early days of his presidency, it was estimated that the repeal of Obamacare would cost twenty million people their health insurance coverage. Because of the pandemic, a lot of the forty million who lost their jobs also lost their employee based health insurance. They replaced it with Obamacare. So if this action gets approved by the Supreme Court, the elimination of Obamacare will cost an estimated twenty-five to thirty million Americans their health insurance.....during a pandemic! It's nothing but being CRUEL!
I'm not the only one who feels this way. When Nancy Pelosi heard about this, she responded in much the same language:
"President Trump and the Republicans' campaign to rip away the protections and benefits of the Affordable Care Act in the middle of the coronavirus crisis is an act of unfathomable cruelty."
It's unknown when the Court will hear this case. It could be in their fall session or may be held over until the spring of 2021. They'll get another shot at this after failing to repeal Obamacare once before....to the disgust of Donald Trump. We'll see if they'll rule in the best interests of millions of Americans or, if like the man who appointed two of them, will be just as CRUEL!
