Power of Prayer
Tonight is the start of the Jewish holiday, Rosh Hashanah. If celebrating, Happy New Year. If not, you can still have a happy New Year.
I'm not a very religious person. I do believe in a higher power. I'm just not sure what that power is. I do feel I have a spiritual side. For me it's more about Karma. It suits me better than organized religion.
Both my daughters are very religious. They each attended Moody Bible Institute. They go to services every week. Attend bible studies. Go to religious conferences. The entire works. At times I don't understand but it works for them.
I'm friendly with their Rabbi. We've had religious and philosophical conversations. Our children are the same ages and were in the same classes in school. That's how we met years ago, before my girls started attending his Temple.
I was chatting with him over the weekend. He asked how I was feeling and how I was dealing with Parkinson's. I said it depended on the day but basically I was doing ok.
He then asked if it was ok that I was included in the congregations weekly prayers. Now I'm not big on this prayer thing. When someone mentions that prayers are needed for a person, I always say I'll be thinking good thoughts for them. It's a fine line between the two but the line does exist.
I told him it was up to him. I was good with whatever he decided. I figure if someone wants to say a prayer on my behalf, what could it hurt, right. Good thoughts are fine by me, too.
So for us Jews, it's the start of a New Year. Break out your hats and horns...well, more like yarmulkes and shofars.
Observant or not, it's a chance to start anew. Keep the good in your life, change what you don't like. Keep thinking those good thoughts.
Happy New Year to all. L'Shanah Tovah.
