Ric Ocasek didn't give up on his dream and neither should you
On June 6, 1978, the self-titled first album by the new wave rock band The Cars was released. The record included the hits "Good Times Roll", "Just What I Needed", "My Best Friend's Girl", "You're All I've Got Tonight" and "Bye Bye Love." "The Cars" is considered one of the greatest debut albums by any rock and roll band.
The writer of those great tunes and the face of the band was Ric Ocasek. The day that first album dropped, Ocasek was thirty-four years old. That's ancient for a rock musician to have his first hit and first bit of fame. He was far from an overnight sensation. Ocasek spent the previous ten years in five different bands before finding success with The Cars.
His story shows that by hard work and not giving up, you can make your dreams come happen. He's not the only person to find success later in life. John Mahoney didn't start his acting career until age thirty-seven. His biggest success, the television show "Frasier", came in his mid-fifties. Mark Twain published his first book at age forty-one. He went on to write twenty-seven more. Grandma Moses began her painting career at age seventy-eight.
It shows that you can make your dream happen. You Have to keep working at it. Don't give up. Persistence pays off.
We all have a dream. Maybe you want to write a book, play a musical instrument, learn a new language or take a trip of a lifetime. The above examples, and many more, gives us hope that we can accomplish our goals. Age doesn't matter. We can make our dreams come true.
Ric Ocasek died on Sunday at age seventy-five. Thanks for all the great music. Thanks for not giving up on your dream.
