Roy Orbison is doing a US concert tour
Monday night. October 1st. Fox Theater. Oakland, California. The music coming from the orchestra is "Only The Lonely." The legendary singer Roy Orbison is in concert. He's playing "live" for the first time in three decades. Nothing unusual about this except...
ROY ORBISON HAS BEEN DEAD SINCE 1988!!
You may be wondering how this is possible? It's simple....what you're seeing is a hologram of Roy. His voice and movements are synced up to the music of a live orchestra. Sixteen songs later, you've seen a live Roy Orbison concert....sorta.
The concept isn't new. In the past we've seen holograms of Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley. In the last year, there was a Ronnie James Dio hologram tour.
BASE Hologram and the Orbison family tested this out with a concert tour in Europe. It went well and now it's on to North America, with a twenty-eight date tour. In 2019, there will be a residency at the Andy Williams Moon River theater, in Branson, Missouri. Hmmm....maybe there can be a Roy & Andy hologram duet?
Is this thing creepy? Yes! Is this thing cool? Yes! They aren't mutually exclusive concepts.
If this thing works out, think of all the opportunities for new concerts. How about The Heartbreakers with hologram Tom Petty? Maybe the Eagles dump Vince Gill and Deacon Frey and replace them with sorta original member hologram Glenn Frey? What about if Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr hook up with hologram John and hologram George? The Beatles?
I'm telling you the possibilities are endless.
I just hope the people in charge of the concerts will show some taste and handle all of this with care. Hmmm...a Traveling Wibury hologram show?
In Dreams: Roy Orbison in Concert-The Hologram Tour comes to the Chicago area at the Genesee Theater in Waukegan on October 21.
