Should we feel sorry for people who vote against their own best interests?
People will tell you lots of different reasons for the way they vote. In reality it comes down to one of two things: a. Will their choice make their life better? b. Will their choice make the lives of our citizens better?
If most of us were honest about it, a trumps b...pun intended.
Everyone knew the repeal of the Affordable Care Act/Obamacare was coming. Nobody should be surprised that this is happening. You had to know if a Republican was elected President, this was going to be high on the list. All seventeen of them ran on this issue. Congress has tried to defund and repeal this law so many times over the last six years that I've lost count. It's only because of President Obama's vetoes that the ACA still exists.
So if this is important to you, why would you do anything to make you lose it? (shrugging shoulders)
I'm watching the news the other night. There's a story about a woman from a southern state. Big time Donald Trump country. She has cancer and is insured through the Affordable Care Act. Her treatment which would normally cost thousands of dollars each month is covered by her insurance. She admits she couldn't handle it financially without insurance. Obamacare is saving her from bankruptcy and more importantly, is saving her life.
Yet she voted for Donald Trump.
The final scene was her pleading for Congress not to repeal Obamacare. She was pleading for her life.
No one wishes Cancer on anyone. We all know someone who has done battle with that horrendous disease. Most of us have lost a loved one to Cancer. One out of four people have had their own Cancer battle. Empathy comes easily.
But in the above case....not so much. What did she think was going to happen? I wish this was the only time I've heard this story. Sadly, far from it.
People make bad decisions all the time. Usually you have to live with it. I hope in this case she doesn't have to die with it.
This story goes back three years. We may be headed that way again if the Affordable Care Act is repealed.
