Surviving National Cancer Survivor's Day
Happy National Cancer Survivor's Day!
I mean that. It's a good day to be happy. It's a good day to be alive and a good thing to celebrate.
A lot of people have trouble with the word survivor. I'm one of them. I think it has to do with having a Stage One cancer. It doesn't feel like I've survived anything. There was no chemo. There was no radiation. Nothing! The word felt dishonest, especially compared to people who have gone through those treatments. When you have a little procedure and others have gone through years of battles, the word survivor doesn't ring true.
However.....
Today, I get that having Stage One cancer that was easily cured is a good thing. Today, I get that surviving is not a competition. Today, I get that those with higher stage cancers are happy for those of us that didn't have to go through their travails. Today, I get that being able to write this is much better than the alternative.
So today, along with more than 15 million other Americans who are cancer survivors, I'm going to celebrate and I'm ecstatic to be able to do so.
Happy National Cancer Survivors Day!
There's a lot of blogs that deal with Cancer. Here are a couple that will be celebrating Survivor's Day. Cancer Is Not A Gift is written by Kerri Morris. God Is My Running Partner is written by Steve DeLuca.
