Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski are bigger heroes than John McCain in saving Obamacare
It was a big night for the Democrats. It was a bigger night for the America. Millions of people did not lose their health insurance.
If you watched the breaking news last night, all you heard was John McCain this and John McCain that. I guess there's a new acronym today: WWMD (what will McCain do).
Finally, the vote on the skinny repeal came down. Yanno...the small repeal that would uninsure sixteen millions Americans...many of them in the next year. At close to 2am in the nations capital, they started counting the votes. It was up in the air until you heard the gasp after McCain voted NO! We should have known this was going to happen after Mike Pence left the Senate because his vote wouldn't be needed to break a tie, but it was more dramatic and stunning this way.
We don't know the reason why he voted like he did. Maybe his diagnosis with brain cancer tells him that he shouldn't take away insurance from others in the same situation. Maybe he had a come to God moment and wants this to be his legacy. Maybe he just wants to stick it to Trump one final time. No one knows, he's not saying and it's likely that's the way it will be.
All we know is John McCain is the hero of the moment. WTG John. Congrats on doing the right thing. But all this attention he's getting would be like Chicago Cubs pitcher Mike Montgomery getting the MVP of the World Series for throwing the two pitches that ended the game and won the championship. Others have done most of the hard work and received much less, if any credit.
It's easy to forget the other two Republican Senators who voted no, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski. They've been in on this since the beginning. Every time there's been a vote, they've voted no. In this last week, they've taken hits from the President, threatened with violence and loss of state funding by other congressmen and the cabinet, and scorned by Republican party. RINO's! Yet, they fought back. Yet, they persisted. They put people ahead of party. When it came for the final vote, they were right there again. Two solid no's against repeal. But last night they were in the background. Not even a single nasty tweet about them from Trump.
Maybe it's sexism or maybe McCain is the sexier story, but the two Senators from Maine and Alaska are real heroes. They're the real MVP's.
That's why on a day where John McCain is being deified, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski are the ones with their pictures on this blog.
