The mid-term elections are over: Are you happy with the results?
It's Wednesday morning. The mid-terms are over. There wasn't exactly a blue wave. There wasn't exactly a red tsunami. When you take a close look there was something for everyone to be happy about....and to be sad about.
If you're a Democrat, you're ecstatic that the House has turned blue. They'll be in charge of every committee. It will also provide a check on the president's powers. That's a great thing.
It was a wonderful night for women. They came out to vote in massive numbers and it not only turned the House, it got themselves elected to seats. More than one hundred women were elected to House seats. They also made inroads in the Senate and Governorships.
If you're a Republican, you have to be happy with the Senate results. You not only kept control but gained seats. You may hate Ted Cruz (everyone does regardless of party) but you managed to keep him in power. You also picked up the seats in North Dakota, Missouri and maybe Florida. It looks like you'll have 53-55 Republicans in the Senate, so you'll be able to keep confirming those ultra-conservative judges without any problems. You also won't have to worry if Susan Collins or Lisa Murkowski will derail your unpopular legislation. You have enough votes to make them inconsequential.
See...right there that's enough to make everyone happy. But there's more....so much more.
It's a great day in Illinois. Because we didn't have a budget for more than two year, everything took a big hit. Schools, hospitals, mental health facilities, charities, senior/low income housing and homeless shelters lost funding. In some cases these organizations were forced to close. Our now lame duck Governor told people at risk to suck it up. While I'm not thrilled with our new Governor, I'm almost sure he won't be as callous. Keyword is almost...we'll see.
It's a great day on Kansas. Kris Kobach was soundly defeated. Kris was the guy who was in charge of that fake Trump committee about voter fraud. Remember the one that didn't find a single case of fraud!! Yep, that guy! He ran for Governor while still keeping his job as Secretary of State. That meant he controlled the election. He controlled who could vote. And yet, with all of those advantages, in a red state, Kris was soundly defeated by a Democratic woman, Laura Kelly. Kobach's response was it was God's will. Dude, it was the people's will that you couldn't overcome. And it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. But if God didn't play a part in this...thanks!
It was even a great day for our current President. Sure he lost the House, but the candidates he spent the most time with won. He's playing up those victories on Twitter and I'm sure his press conference will be full of that message. I'm sure his re-election campaign, which has already started, will be full of that message.
See...I told you there was something to make everyone happy.
That's it for 2018. It's on to 2020. I'm sure everyone won't be as happy the day after that election.
