The search for all fifty states
Now somewhere in the Black Mountain Hills of Dakota There lived a young boy named Rocky Raccoon
Do you have a bucket list? When you get older, there are things you want to do and see before you call it a day. Some are important, others not so much. One thing I want to do is go to all fifty states.
I've had this on my bucket list for quite some time, but didn't take it seriously until the last few years. Real life gets in the way. But now I have more free time...a lot more free time...and there's a chance I can actually get this done. In the last two years, I've been to five new states. In 2017, I took a trip to the Carolina's. In 2018, separate trips to Seattle and Portland picked up Washington and Oregon. Earlier this year, during a weekend in Memphis, we crossed the mighty Mississippi to enter Arkansas. The unseen states are now down to the elite eight!
That leads to this weeks vacation/adventure. Later today, I'm flying to Rapid City, South Dakota to see Mt. Rushmore and whatever else is around there. I've always thought Mt. Rushmore is something you look at, think that's cool and then you're done. They do have a lighting ceremony each night and that sounds pretty awesome. Plus there's this Crazy Horse monument that they've been building for seventy years that they can't quite finish. Hmmm...you think it will be done by the time we get there?
So back to that fifty states search thing. From the Rapid City area, we're off to Yellowstone. Going to look at some wild animals (not too close), canyons, waterfalls and geysers. Nature! Between all this scenery, we'll be in Wyoming, Montana and Idaho...all new states for me. By the time the week ends, it'll be down to the final four.
North Dakota, Nebraska, Utah and Alaska.
I'm already thinking about this foursome. I almost had Utah earlier this year. There was a trip to Las Vegas planned, with a one day side trip to Utah, but a kidney stone cancelled that one. I'm pretty sure that's how Utah will be covered. The others seem to be a little more troublesome. We could probably go out of our way on this trip to hit North Dakota, but I'm not sure we have the time. Nebraska is probably easier. There are lots of flights from Chicago to Omaha, but what do you do once you're there? Then there's Alaska. I'd love to see it. I know a lot of people who have done an Alaskan cruise in the last couple of years. All of them rave about it. It's a little lot pricey, but if you want to go to all fifty, you have to go to Alaska. I guess it's a question of when, more than if. All that's in the future...maybe far off future.
First off, is heading off to see the dead Presidents. No laptops on this trip, so I'll let you know about how it went in ten days or so. Try not to miss me...okay, maybe just a little. I'll say hello to George, Tom, Abe and Teddy from all of you.
Now Rocky Raccoon, he fell back in his room Only to find Gideon's Bible Gideon checked out, and he left it, no doubt To help with good Rocky's revival
