The search for some very fine people in Charlottesville
“You also had some very fine people on both sides.”~~Donald Trump 2017
This weekend I’m heading to a wedding a couple of hours from Washington D.C. One of our stops will be in Charlottesville, Virginia—home of the University of Virginia. A couple of people in our party, including me, want to check out the school’s campus. I love college towns, so I’m looking forward to seeing it.
I also like to talk with the residents whenever I go someplace new. It gives me a more authentic feel to what the community is like. The conversations should be easy because according to the current occupant of the White House, there are “some very fine people” hanging out in Charlottesville.
So, where in the city will I find those very fine people? I would head to the place where it all took place—at the Robert E. Lee statue, but not only was it taken down, the statue was incinerated.
There is another statue that could work—The Thomas Jefferson statue on the college’s campus. Jefferson’s reputation has taken a huge hit over the last couple of decades—it kind of works that way for slave owners. But, he is a very much love-hate figure—especially in a southern town. This would be the perfect place to find those very fine people on both sides, except it’s summertime and there won’t be many students on campus. Plus we’ll be there late in the afternoon—those that were there will be gone for the weekend—DAMN!!
But, here’s an idea… while we’re there, we are going to have to find a place for lunch. Restaurants are a good place to interact with people—both of the very fine and not so very fine variety. And, I think I found the perfect place…
WAFFLE HOUSE!!
I’ve heard that waffles, pancakes, eggs, grits—especially grits are high on the list of food choices for very fine people. That’s cool—we have something in common. It’ll give us something to chat about—although I’m thinking with me wearing my chai necklace and a FDT ballcap, we might not make it breakfast food.
It should—-could—-maybe be a fun afternoon. But if I do run into some of those very fine people, we’re going to need a topic to talk about. Hmmm…how about who was the better leader—Donald Trump or Abe Lincoln? Sounds safe, right?
