The times they are a changing...and not for the better
Politicians....pfffft!!!
It's December. In Chicago that means it's cold and snowy. And this December has been very cold and very snowy.
The Illinois state government has been at odds over the budget for two years. No one is willing to compromise. When that happens, the people that tend to get hurt the worst are those who need the help the most. Nothing new about this.
The North Side Housing & Supportive Services shelter in the Uptown area of Chicago has seventy-two beds for homeless people. They are scheduled to close on December 23rd. Two days before Christmas and in the middle of the worst December in years. The reason? They haven't been getting money from the state.
I know of two mental health clinics in the same area that have had to cutback on services to low income clients because of the budget impasses but in those cases no one lost their homes. Yeah....this is no big deal...just a few more homeless people out on the street.
It would take $100,000 to keep the shelter open. When Governor Rauner was asked about this situation his office responded: " Meaningful organizations are having to make difficult decisions because there is no balanced budget."
Always nice to see our politicians having a heart at the holidays.
Come senators, congressmen Please heed the call Don't stand in the doorway Don't block up the hall For he that gets hurt Will be he who has stalled There's the battle outside raging It'll soon shake your windows and rattle your walls For the times they are a-changing
