There can be no unity until there is retribution
Insurrection- A violent uprising against an authority or government: What occurred at the Capitol building last Wednesday was not an attempted insurrection. It fit the definition of the word exactly. There needs to be consequences and punishment for those who played a role...any role...in the insurrection against our country.
Unity-A condition of harmony. The state of being united or joined as a whole. Amazingly, those whose words helped fuel what we saw last Wednesday are now asking that we join together in a state of unity. They feel that the only way we can overcome the disorder is to try to move forward. Let's look at some of the words asking for unity from those whose earlier words and actions led to last week's events:
"Biden has a historic opportunity to unify America behind the sentiment that one's political divisions have gone too far."~Marco Rubio Lovely words Marco. Where were they when you cheered about the bus carrying Biden campaign workers being forced off a Texas highway?
"Impeaching the president with just 12 days left will only divide the country more. I've reached out to President-elect Biden today and plan to speak to him about how we must lower the temperature and unite the country to solve America's challenges.~Kevin McCarthy More lovely words. Why didn't he use the term President-elect back in November when it was apparent that Biden had won the election? Why was he among the House Republicans who challenged the election last Wednesday based on lies that he perpetrated on behalf of the lame-duck president?
"We must come together and put this anger and division behind us."~Ted Cruz One of the leaders of the insurrection now wants us to forget about what happened and his role in it?
It's as if these Republicans and many more of them who have called for unity are asking us to hold hands and all sing "Kumbaya" and "Get Together". Well not yet, folks, not yet! Until those who instigated the resurrection pay the price for their words and actions, there can be no unity.
Impeachment proceedings need to move ahead. I don't care if the Senate doesn't have a trial until the Spring, the stench of being the only President of the United States to be impeached twice will never come off Donald Trump. The House of Representatives needs to censure, if not expel, Mo Collins, who spoke at the rally last Wednesday and still continues to lie about election fraud. The Senate needs to censure Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz. Both knew the words they were saying were lies. Both knew the words were potentially dangerous. Both did it for their own political reasons and even tried to fundraise during the insurrection. Later, they continued to back the effort to disenfranchise voters and overturn the election.
That's just the start. I'm sure Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and other Democrats have some other ideas they can use for retribution against the responsible parties. Until that happens there can be no unity. Until that happens there can be no Kumbaya. Until that happens we won't be smiling on our brother. We won't be trying to get together. We won't be loving one another right now!
