To celebrate Father's Day, I'm going to jam out on some "Dad's Rock”
Welcome to Father’s Day 2024. To all the dads out there, I hope you’re enjoying our day. Most of us celebrate by having food and spending time with our offspring. Then there’s a baseball game and the final round of Golf’s U.S. Open.
Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it?
But, I was yesterday days old when I found a new thing for dads—or at least new for this dad. I was trying to figure out what to write for this Father’s Day column and was drawing a blank. After all, I’ve doing this for more than a decade and I thought I had touched all the bases. So, I hit the Google machine and found what is called “Dad’s Rock.” My first thought was, “Well fuck—they're going to make fun of us on our most sacred day.” Then I found the definition of “Dad’s Rock”:
“I'd say dad rock is anything that makes a dad get serious about dancing or just loosen up to the beat. That act of a dad trying to be cool is what becomes cheesy, not so much the music itself. Perhaps it's the combination of serious and cheesy that makes a song, regardless of era or genre, dad rock.”
Sigh!
When I read this I was listening to The James Gang's “Funk #49.” I admit I was also standing up occasionally and playing air guitar with Joe Walsh. Hey—air guitar is cool? It’s not?
Then I asked Alexa to play some Eagles. Her first two choices were “Take It Easy” and “Hotel California.” Excuse me a minute while I play some air guitar with Joe and Don Felder.
Okay—okay—okay. I now get this “Dad Rock” thing. Yeah, it may be cheesy, but that doesn’t make it bad, does it? Or does it just make me—and us old? I’m still working on that. But, I know I’m going to spend a little of my day listening to some “Dad Rock.” I may even do some more air guitar. You can, too. No judgment—okay, maybe a little judgment. Happy Father’s Day! Here’s a catchy tune to get you started!!
