Today is the twentieth anniversary of the Concert for George
November 29, 2001. Legendary Beatles guitarist George Harrison died on this date after a long battle with throat cancer. Exactly one year later, his friends and colleagues put on an all-star concert honoring Harrison's life and music. Organized by his widow, Olivia, and Eric Clapton, the Concert for George, at London's Royal Albert Hall, included songs from his years with The Beatles and his solo career.
Among the performers playing Harrison's tunes were Jeff Lynne, Gary Brooker, Billy Preston, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as performances by Ravi Shankar and a comedy skit by members of Monty Python. It led to a film of the concert, as well as an album.
Today is the twentieth anniversary of the concert. Movie theaters throughout the world will be having what is billed as a one-time showing of the film (although some will be showing it tomorrow and others in early December).
On this date, Beatles fans always spend at least a moment or two remembering the life of George Harrison. In the two decades since the concert, Shankar, Petty, Brooker, Preston and drummer Jim Capaldi have also passed on. Watching this film, either in the theater or however you stream it, would be a great way to honor all of them and some special music.
