Treasure Island is closing: It's another end of an era moment
It was the mid-1970's. I'm out of college and looking for my first adult apartment. I find a place in the city near Addison and Lake Michigan. There were three reasons I chose that location: 1. It was a five minute to the lake and I've always loved being near water. 2. Money. The rent for this studio apartment was $75/month. You're reading this correctly...Seventy-Five!! 3. Most importantly, it was a five minute walk to Wrigley Field. Okay. Maybe I'm overstating the adult thing.
I didn't know it then but there was another place that became an important part of new life....Treasure Island grocery story.
Treasure Island was a quick walk from my new home. It was more than just the food. You'd walk in and see your neighbors and folks from other neighborhoods who also loved this store. You'd also become friends with the people working there. More than four decades later, I still can picture and remember the names of a lot of the cashiers. T.I. was almost like your neighborhood bar. They knew your name.
The reason for this quick remembrance is Treasure Island is closing all their stores in the Chicago area. October 12th is the final day. Whenever something from our past leaves, it brings back memories and activates all our feels. We lament their closing and almost always say it's an end of an era. Since hearing about this yesterday, I've only said and thought that about a dozen times.
I'll have more memories on closing day but decided today would be a good day to head to Treasure Island and take a look around and bring up those feels once again. Here's some photos:
