Walk A Mile In My Shoes
'Tis the season for charity walking. In Chicago, there have been 250 walks/runs/bike rides so far this year. That number has grown from 115 in 2005.
Although the city has a hard time finding room for all these events, they're happy to collect the fee.
Event fees range from $365 to $12,000. The park district has raised $9.7 million in permit fees this year.
Over the past weekend, my ex-wife was in the AIDS run/walk Chicago. A cousin was in a 5K for Diabetes and two sons of a college friend helped raise over $1000 in a walk for Alzheimers's.
Busy weekend. Busy month. September has the most walks of any month. It's understandable. The weather starts to cool off but it's still nice enough to be outside. Other charities having walks/runs included Special Olympics and Ovarian Cancer.
October will be another busy month. The 35th Annual Ron Santo Walk to Cure Diabetes takes place this coming Sunday, October 6th. There are six different locations in the city and suburbs.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's "Light The Night" walks takes place the weekend of October 19-20. They have four different locations.
October 20 also features the 3rd local Parkinson's Disease Moving Day. It's a 5K walk/run in Lincoln Park. I'll be participating in that one. More on that as we get a little closer.
A bunch of different charities, including the Les Turner ALS Foundation, are sponsoring teams running in the Chicago Marathon, which takes place Sunday, October 13th.
Plus there are fundraising events for Breast Cancer and Colon Cancer.
There are lots of opportunities to show support. Chances are good you know someone participating in a charity walk. If you're reading this, you do for sure.
Join in....go for a walk.
