Walk on the Wild Side
If you read the title and expected Lou Reed, you've come to the wrong place. Also, no girls of any color will be singing "doo doo doo, doo,"
But let's chat about walks for charities....
1.) Over the weekend, in Chicago, was the last local Susan G. Koman walk for the Cure. It's a three day-60 mile walk that raises money for Breast Cancer. In 2013, there were 14 of these walks nationwide. In 2014, the number will be cut in half. Seven walks have been eliminated, including the one in Chicago.
Donations and participation are down. They took a big hit when they announced that would no longer be sending funds to Planned Parenthood. In this economy, when you're fighting for donations, it pays not to piss people off!!
BTW, my cousin, Lauren participates in the San Diego walk. No matter what you think of the politics, it's a great cause. She'll gladly accept your money.
2.) Talking about walks, I started training for the Parkinson's Moving Day walk, in October.
First thing was to find out how far the walk is because it wasn't on the website. I sent an email to the organizer, Sean, asking the distance. The real organizer, Sara, responded. Ok...so I got her name wrong...strike one. Btw...it's a 5k.
Next was figuring out how far in miles a 5k is. I asked four people on Saturday and no one knew. What does that say about our educational system. I did what any normal person these days would do...GOOGLE!! 5k is 3.1xxx miles. Hey..it's PI!!
I usually walk a mile or so every day but it's broken up by stops at stores, trains, people watching ...and yes by people I mean women. But, I'll need to do the 5k without stopping so yesterday I decided to get started. See how much work is needed.
I needed to go somewhere yesterday. The plan was to take the train there, walk back. I even brought clothes to change into for the walk. I started out towards the train. It was a lovely day. I thought why not walk there. Made it to my destination easily. Figured it was between 1.5-2.00 miles. Only problem was when I reached my destination, I was sweaty and it wasn't a sweaty kind of place. Maybe I should just stick with the plan? Next step is on Wednesday. I'm going to try to do a 3 mile walk....go out for 1.5 miles and come back. Just think PI...or Pie?
Ok...ok...I know you've been thinking about it so here it is...I said hey girl..take a walk on the wild side. Doo, dooo, dooo, dooo, dooo
