What Am I Going To Do Without Dave
Last night was the series finale of The Late Show with David Letterman. He's been off the air for just a few hours and I already miss him.
I've been with Dave since the beginning. It's one of the longest relationships of my life. I remember the first NBC Late Night show...February 1, 1982. Bill Murray was the first guest and was hysterically funny. This was cutting edge television. It was much different than anything else on the air. I was hooked from day one.
Man...the memories from that show...Larry"Bud" Melman, Brother Theodore, Fran Lebowitz, Stupid Pet Tricks, Cher, Madonna, Howard Stern, Chris Elliott under the stairs, Paul Shaffer & The World's Most Dangerous Band! Even Jay Leno made monthly appearances and was edgy & funny.
ANDY KAUFMAN AND JERRY LAWLER!!
When Dave moved to CBS so did I. The Late Show was on an hour earlier. Good timing for a guy with two kids under age five.
Dave's audience changed and the show wasn't as edgy as Late Night. Dave went from a sport coat and tennies to wearing nice suits. Still it was a lot hipper than what Leno was doing on Tonight...a lot hipper.
There are plenty of memorable moments. Heart surgery, Oprah, more Bill Murray, flirting with Julia Roberts, Sonny & Cher reunion, and Drew Barrymore flashing her boobs. Johnny Carson made his final television appearance with Dave and not Jay. Johnny knew!!!
And then there was Dave coming back on the air after 9/11. Phew! Wow! That's what television is all about!
So the final Dave just ended and I'm already thinking about what am I going to do at 10:35? CBS is showing reruns of The Mentalist. Really? I don't think so.
I guess I could try one of the Jimmy's but that would be a rebound relationship. I'm not over the loss of Dave and I'm watching someone else the next day? It would feel empty and cheap.
I'm gonna miss Dave.
I guess I could read, write or listen to some music. Maybe I can even start going to sleep at a normal hour.
I'm gonna miss Dave.
